Eiffel tower

When planning a trip to Europe, take visiting Paris into consideration. Its history goes back to the third century B.C., when the Celts settled on the Île de la Cité island on the River Seine. Today this place is the city center, and one of the well-known monuments situated there is the Notre Dame Cathedral. For centuries Paris developed fast thanks to the dynasties of Valois and Bourbons, becoming one of the most important cultural and intellectual centres. At the turn of the eleventh and twentieth century Paris was even considered as the artistic capital of the world! At that time Paris was renowned for its steel 324-metre A-shaped construction – the Eiffel Tower. For some time it was the highest tower in the world. Now it is the biggest tourist attraction in Paris, which has been visited by more than 200 million people! The view from the peak of the tower is absolutely breathtaking.

Paris offers so many beautiful places and monuments, that it is really hard to present a list of the most important ones. The whole city center is marvelous. One of the building is really hard to miss, as it stretches for 850 meter

s. It is a former royal palace with the biggest art museum in the world. Tourists wander 15 kilometres to admire the best art pieces in the history, e.g. Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci, covered with bulletproof glass (this is probably the best guarded painting in the world), or a statue of the Winged Victory of Samothrace. Every first Sunday of a month the museum can be visited for free. Another museum building worth seeing is Musée d’Orsay, which is an impressive former station building, which gathers paintings of the Impressionists. Those craving culture in a bit of a provocative manner should take a look into Moulin Rouge – a red windmill, which houses the most famous cabaret in the world, with its history starti

ng in 1889. Artists are clad in bold costumes, while they dance cancan, and you can see them twice a day in a spectacle called „Féerie”. Its popularity is so big that

Those seeking art and cultural experience should definitely visit two more artistic districts – Montmartre and Montparnasse, or a vanguard contemporary art museum – the Centre Pompidou, with its astonishing architecture (the building is entangled with pipes). Not everyone knows that Paris has its own wax museum – Musée Grévin.

Les Champs Elysées

Les Champs Elysées

The most renowned street in Paris is Les Champs Elysées, which stretches from Place de la Concorde for two kilometers to the north west to Charles de Gaulle square. Along the street are situated exclusive boutiques, restaurants and theatres. It is hard to believe that 400 years before there were fields. A very characteristic monument is placed at the end of the street by the de Gaulle square – the Arc de Triomphe. It was built in order to honored the brave ones fighting for France during the French revolution and the Napoleonic Wars. At the other end of Les Champs Elysées is Place de la Concorde with its Egyptian obelisk, which has more than

3300 years! This square is veiled by a bit of a blood-chilling history – during the French revolution (the end of the eighteenth century) a guillotine was placed there, which took more than 1300 lives, including the ones of the king Louis XVI and the queen Marie Antoinette.

What else is worth seeing?

Paris offers many beautiful monuments of a sacral character, e.g. the gothic Notre Dame Cathedral,Notre Dame Cathedral the Sacré Coeur basilica, built on the peak of the Montmartre hill, the de la Madeleine church, built in an atypical for Catholic churches neoclassical style. The capital city of France is famous for its vintage cemeteries, where many famous people are buried, e.g. in Père-Lachaise cemetery a poet and a rock musician Jim Morrison. There are also beautiful parks in Paris, e.g. a spacious Luxembourg Garden. If you want to take a rest after hours of sightseeing, it is worth buying a ticket for a cruise on the River Seine and perceive Paris from a different perspective.
